Hydrogen fuel cells

PROS:
• Abundant source
• Fuel of the future
• Clean emissions
CONS:
• Cost to make Hydrogen
• No infrastructure
• Decades away

"At the moment, hydrogen costs up to three times as much to produce as petrol (gasoline) or diesel fuel, and scientists can't yet agree on the best way to store it. And even if the experiment works [in Iceland], it won't be easy to replicate elsewhere, because few countries have such easy access to clean electricity."

Videos:

Hydrogen Economy - Iceland (18 min) Meet "Professor Hydrogen" - Bragi Arnason, who saw the potential to use Iceland's geothermal resource to not only produce electricity, but also to fuel Iceland's transportation systems, as well. The quote above is from this video.

Iceland geyserIceland's Hydrogen Economy (4 min) Youtube clip narrated by Alan Alda discusses Iceland's Hydrogen success and their vision for "on-site" hydrogen production, requiring that only electricity and water be provided to filling stations.

Jay Leno on the BMW Hydrogen initiative (4 min) Auto enthusiast & comedian Jay Leno test drives BMW's hydrogen/gas offering. He points out that most hydrogen cars use gaseous hydrogen fuel cells to generate electricity that in turn drives electric motors. BMW uses liquid hydrogen at -423 degrees farenheit (-253 celsius) to fuel an internal combustion engine.

Test driving the Honda FCX Clarity hydrogen fuel cell car (5 min) Honda presents the 2009 FCX Clarity: The world's first production hydrogen fuel cell vehicle. Honda admits that there will be an "infrastructure challenge" initially, but they plan to help bridge over that time with home hydrogen generating stations that will be fueled by natural gas.
